Alba, Bobo, Coco, and Dodo are in a relay race that has the following rules: two people on the team must run together from one side of a field to the other, carrying a baton, then one person on that side of the field must carry the baton back. The goal is to get all four people across the field.





Alba takes one minute to run across the field, Bobo takes two minutes, Coco takes five minutes, and Dodo takes ten minutes. When two people run together, they can only go as fast as the slower of the two runners. Alba, being the fastest, suggests that she should run across with each of the others in turn. She says this will save time because she can run back to pick up the next teammate in only one minute. A quick calculation suggests this would take the team nineteen minutes. Coco points out that there is another method they could use that would take seventeen minutes.
