Pirate-Relay Race Ideas?

I am throwing a birthday party for my (soon to be 9) year old and its a pirate themed. I am thinking of having the kids do a relay race and I am wondering if anyone has any ideas of pirate themed stuff it can include. I was thinking of them trying to hang onto something that was hard to hold (kinda like an egg on a spoon) but am not able to thinking of anything pirate-y.
