How can a world championship event not be decided by a goal? PK's is not an acceptable way to end a game?

I just find it amazing that a world championship in any true sport can be decided not on the field of play, but by something as arbitrary as penalty kicks. I don't understand howyou work your a$$ off for 4 years, play countless matches and then can't play until the final game is decided on the field.





You constantly hearthat the players would be too fatigued to go on until a goal is scored, well so what that would bring conditoining and smart substitutions into it, not the luck of a pk. Why not just have a team relay race dribbling the ball from one side of the field to the other to decide the match. Why not have a contest to see which goalie can punt the ball the farthest to decide a champion?





If the greatest athletes in the world, playing for the championship for their sport can't run until a conclusion, then allow additional substitutes for each additional OT, or start taking players off the field for each OT.|||I find shoot outs unfair (and unexciting) as well. This sounds ridiculous but they should take out the goal keepers in extra time. That would really test the defence of each team and make it easier for them to break the tie.|||I wanna say 2 things...


1. you're completely right, the golden goal or sudden death was a way better solution than penalties, particularly in WC !


2. To js3971. PLEASE, don't compare "soccer", which IS actually Football, to "your football", which is actually a modified copy of Rugby ! ! !

I mean if top teams aren't scoring they're obviously busting their asses to keep goals from happening.|||actually, that doesn't sound that unreasonable... i mean playing on, (but don't take the players out.) not the idea about a dribbleing race or a goalie punt, that woudl be just as bad. pks are the worst way to end a match (beside the dribbling and the punting thing). They also need to do somethng about the system of refing, because that clearly doesn't work either. You could do like a golden goal, but i think that they do it because it would take way too long to decide it that way, or at least they think so, and it could take way too long.|||Well, it's soccer. If they didn't have penalty kicks, the game could last a century without anyone scoring.





But at the same time, could you imagine American football breaking a tie by allowing one player to go one on one against another player from scrimmage. It would make a mockery of the game.|||Have you ever played futbol? If you havent, you can start looking for a team in your area and then you will understand why the penalties.|||any true sport? if thats how you feel mate then dont watch football, the rules are the rules and no one knows penalty heartbreakers better than us english. two hours of play is long enough, if you want a nice long game then watch cricket
