Why does relay racing depend as much on teamwork as on speed of individual runners?

Because the hand-off of the baton is just as important as the individual performance of the athletes. If one athlete fails to give a hand-off properly, it will usually cost the entire team the race. If any member of the team doesn't take their training seriously, it could cost the entire team the race. It's very much a team sport.
